Comment: Favorite Washington tourist route blocked by tragic slide

Many Canadian and U.S. tourists have traveled the "Cascade Loop", a scenic, circular trip from Puget Sound to the Columbia River valley and back. However, within this larger "loop" is a shorter loop that provides some of the same scenery in a shorter time period. Unfortunately, this shorter route from/to I-5 via State Routes 20 and 530 is now closed by a tragic mudslide of epic proportion.

On Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 10:37 a.m. local time, a major mudslide occurred 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Oso, Washington, when a portion of an unstable hillside known as the "Hazel Landslide" collapsed, sending mud and debris across the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River and onto the adjacent river valley, covering an area of approximately 1 square mile (2.6 km2). A Washington state geologist says the volume of the Oso landslide was 6-7 million cubic yards, enough to cover 547 football fields, including end zones, six feet deep.

The rescue, recovery, cleanup and restoration effort is huge, and will take many months. If you would like to help with a donation, please visit the United Way of Snohomish County (www.uwsc.org), or the Snohomish County chapter of the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org/wa/everett).

The Ferndale Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon on April 16 will feature a "Cross-Border Update" presented by two local border trade and policy advocates, Jim Pettinger, president of International Market Access, Inc., and Greg Boos, U.S. immigration attorney and border policy analyst. Pettinger will provide an update on the upcoming "Cross-Border Expo" being held at the Silver Reef Event Center on June 12th.  This event will showcase over 60 exhibitors and feature three free educational sessions aimed at "Doing Business in the USA", "Doing Business in Canada" and "Cross-Border (USA) Real Estate Investment." The major purpose of the Expo is to showcase BC and Whatcom County resources that provide facilities and expertise to facilitate trade and travel across the nearby international boundary. Boos will provide a brief progress update on the comprehensive Canada/USA "Border Action Plan", with particular emphasis on issues affecting the movement of people across the border. Boos has recently published a paper on the Jay Treaty, which provides special work access for Canadian aboriginals, and has recently obtained favorable court rulings for clients affected by the U.S. policy of "expedited removal", which he feels has been overused by border officers.

To accomplish its purpose, the conference will feature plenary sessions with keynote speakers, concurrent sessions featuring oral presentations, poster presentations, workshops, frequent opportunities for informal networking, and related off-program events.

In 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Environment Canada (EC) agreed to work together to address cross-border environmental issues facing the Georgia Basin-Puget Sound marine ecosystem (Salish Sea).
