Doing Business in the U.S.

This seminar will provide BC entrepreneurs with an introduction to basic marketing, logistics and border compliance issues when selling to U.S. markets. Topics include: (1) Why now is the right time to begin selling products to the U.S. market; (2) Benefits of selling to the U.S.; (3) Know your costs and understand the regulations; and (4) Understand your market. Export Success Program

The Small Business Information Expo is a FREE trade-show that brings together various government departments and non-profit organizations that support BC small business. The expo also gives you the chance to attend FREE educational panels and the opportunity to meet face-to-face with experts who provide valuable programs and resources to small businesses.
Inland NW World Trade Day
When: Thursday, May 5, 2016 – 8:00am to 5:00pm

In partnership with the U.S. Commercial Service, Inland NW World Trade Day will give local companies, organizations and individuals the opportunity to learn and explore various aspects of conducting business internationally, as well as receive updates on foreign policy and world events that impact the global business climate. The full day of programming will include multiple breakout sessions, a World Economic Forecast from John Shin, senior G10 FX strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, a luncheon keynote from Dr. Lee Boam, retired US Foreign Service Officer (Diplomat) and a special export achievement award from Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers.
Surrey International Trade Awards

Ski to Sea:
America’s original team relay race

The annual Ski to Sea Race  is a seven-legged, 93-mile (150 km) long, multi-event competition held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend in Whatcom County. The race starts on the ski slopes of Mount Baker, a 10,800-foot (3,300 m) volcano, and ends at Marine Park in Fairhaven, on the shore of Bellingham Bay. The seven legs of the race are: cross country skiing, downhill skiing or snowboard, running, bicycling, canoeing, mountain biking, and finally kayaking. The Ski to Sea is considered an entire weekend-long event that is centered on the race. More than 400 teams with over three thousand racers participate in the race. Tens of thousands of spectators gather along the sidelines to watch and participate in fair-like events throughout Bellingham, Ferndale and Fairhaven near the finish line at Marine Park. Other events leading up to the race include a community block party with music and food, a Junior Ski to Sea Race, the hometown Blossomtime Parade, and other special events that provide a wide variety of entertainment and adventure for all who participate.
Introduction to NAFTA and the 3 Free Trade Agreements (Korea, Colombia, Panama)

This program will help you to be in full compliance with all NAFTA regulations. You will know where to go and what to look for to be able to determine if your products qualify for the benefits of NAFTA. Most companies are exposing themselves unnecessarily to NAFTA penalties. In some cases your goods have low or zero duty already and therefore no need to expose your company to potential NAFTA violations or to fill out a NAFTA certificate if your goods do not qualify. Additionally an overview of the 3 new FTA’s (Panama, South Korea, Colombia) will be discussed. Facilitator: Mike Allocca.

US-Canada Summit

More than 40 Canada-U.S. business groups are calling for a three-day Summit to discuss the future of the cross-border trade relationship in the wake of the recent official State visit between U.S. President Barack Obama and the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau. The Canada-U.S. Summit 2016 will focus on Strategies, Advocacy, Gateways, and Engagement. Summit sessions will include discussions on Canada-U.S. key industries: automotive, aerospace, agribusiness, energy, and consumer products, as well as expanded cross-border trade in information technology, labor mobility, regional wellness, and infrastructure development.

Winter 2016 Border Policy Brief


Our Winter 2016 Border Policy Brief, “Exchange Rates, Border Crossings and Retail Sales in the Cascade Gateway” analyzes shifts in the Canadian- U.S. exchange rate, as well as crossing volumes along the Canada – U.S. border over the last decade. Cross-border travel is addressed at the three major gateways along the northern border: Detroit, Buffalo-Niagara, and the Cascade Gateway. The Brief also focuses on retail and online sales in the Cascade Gateway, where the recent decline in Canadian shoppers has impacted sales tax revenue.
